STUDY

By Delta Smith

Thinking of completing some further education to progress your career? To secure your financial future, further education might be a path to follow whether in your current field or starting out afresh. The prospect of juggling work, study and home life can feel overwhelming.

Here are some tips and traps to be prepared from someone with first-hand experience as a working parent.

If the field of study is to progress in your current role, first of all speak to your current employer about any support they might be able to offer, including study leave or financial contribution to funding the education. After all progressive organisations want to attract and retain the best.

Next consider the method of study whether this will be online in person or a combination of both and how this might impact your other commitments. Is the study load set, or do you have flexibility around how many how many units you undertake concurrently? Be realistic about planning in advance what your capacity is. Then set a study schedule and as much as possible stick to it, if you’re a night owl you might find that a block of time in the evening suits you best or if you happen to be an early bird perhaps study before your work day begins is best.

Call on your support network to prop you up in this period. Can you delegate to lighten your load? Think meal delivery service, alternate care arrangements during exam times, perhaps you have to temporarily cut back some social commitments, use your time wisely. Be focused on the outcome to find creative solutions.

Finally get started and have a crack. Investing in yourself is worth the time and effort and your future self will thank you for it.
